Vogue 9022

25 Jan Vogue 9022

How many times have you seen a ready-to-wear garment that you KNEW you could make… if only you had the pattern?

akris punto dressThat was certainly my reaction upon seeing this Akris Punto dress, and when I noticed some similarities in Vogue 9022 to the $995.00 dress, I couldn’t resist. True, the pattern is split vertically rather than horizontally, but I was feeling adventurous, and besides, I loved the pockets.

V9022

V9022 line

How did I do?

IMG_0106

What I really like about the Akris Punto dress is its unstructured but not too oversized nature. I have avoided kimono sleeves because they appear so large, however, Vogue describes this pattern as fitted.

After making the muslin I sewed the dress one size smaller (X-Small). A little tweaking on the sleeves and an adjustment in the back seam gave me the fit I was seeking.

IMG_0126 IMG_0185

The fabric content of the Akris Punto dress is 52% acetate 48% viscose. My dress is sewn in lightweight wool crepe ordered from Mood Fabrics last year. It is unlined and does not wrinkle or itch. I also used the same fabric in this skirt last year.

I took my daughter’s advice to eliminate the back vent, split the side seams and leave the back longer keeping the dress on trend. 😉

IMG_0130

To color block the sleeves, I traced the upper front and back pattern pieces to pattern paper. Starting at the bottom of the sleeve I split the pattern piece in half  but eventually eyeballed it once I came to the underarm curve. How scientific is that?

Afterwards, I added a seam allowance to the new pattern pieces and was quite relieved when all of the pieces matched up in the muslin! If I try this again, I plan to eliminate the upper front seams.

IMG_0207

Many thanks to Akris Punto for inspiring me to try a new style, for I would have overlooked the cute Vogue pattern otherwise.

I’m so pleased with the result that I splurged on a new pair shoes but sadly I’m not as warm as I look. I’ll be wearing my dress with black tights and boots for the next several weeks while sewing with warm sunny thoughts in mind!

Until soon 🙂

Love it! I have made V8805 several times in linen … But seeing your dress has started me thinking I could rework this pattern to copy your inspiration…it has the raglan sleeves already, and horizontal lines…adding the pockets would be a definite plus…
Off to “shop” in my stash!

I, too, had printed out this Akris dress as an inspiration and will use black and white. Your “tweaking” of the sleeves worked well.. I would not have thought to use this pattern but will now! Was thinking of using a rayon crepe but perhaps the lightweight crepe will work just fine. Probably depends on what I can order as we have zero fashion fabric stores here. I am in Naples, FL and will line the dress.

    • goodbyevalentino
Posted at 12:26h, 26 January Reply

Fran, I originally planned to line the dress, but quickly realized how heavy it would become limiting when I could wear it and thinking the lining might even change the appearance of the dress.
Do you ever order fabrics online? Most places will send you swatches. There are no fashion fabric stores where I live either……………. the former textile capital of the US 🙁

      • Fran Giacobbe
Posted at 13:01h, 26 January Reply

Good point! Thanks for mentioning. Perhaps I shall rethink the lining. I almost always order fabrics online. You think a wool crepe will be better than a rayon crepe?

Posted at 14:54h, 26 January Reply

          Fran,
I don’t know what fabric would work better. I just went with what I had, but the rayon might give you a softer drape. Keep me posted 🙂

Wow, I’m really impressed. To tell you the truth, when I heard that you were working on your interpretation of this lovely Vogue pattern I was a bit worried. From your photos and stated height, your body seemed more cheerleader than basketball player, and I thought of the pattern as better suited to a tall, lanky woman on account of its straight, angular style lines. Your use of the softer Akris Punto inspiration and drapey wool crepe made it a very flattering choice for you. Well done! It, is beautiful and you are beautiful in it.

I think your version of the dress is superb. Personally I would have pockets in the front like the vogue pattern rather than in the side seam, which I think makes our hips look bigger than they already are. Great manipulation of the pattern. Inspiring!

Thank you, Sandra! I so agree with you about side pockets. Often I leave them off for that very reason 🙂

Perfection. The black and white color scheme is classic and gorgeous, the styling of the garment is fashion forward yet timeless and the completed look is appropriate for so many occasions.
    A total winner!

What a nice comment, Annie! I can’t get enough black and white and am trying to lay off, but as you said the color combo works with everything 🙂

Stunning! Reminds me of a summer tunic I made by hacking Colette Patterns’ Sencha top. Mine was made entirely in chiffon, with a black top and white bottom. You look great.

Absolutely stunning! Love the dolman sleeve! My kind of Dress, and I’ll be another one who will do some copying! I hope you are flattered by this rather than annoyed. LOL!! I, too, live on the West coast so we’re not likely to run into one another! I love the black/White – it’s wonderful, and I do quite a lot of color blocking with that combination. However, in this version, I don’t need all that white close to my face and hair (My hair is white), so will probably go with a colour like hot pink, or turquoise to replace the white. What do you think?
Love the innovations you used on the hemline also – you are one clever gal! Congratulations!

The dress is beautiful and you look beautiful in it and you have accessorized it to perfection. I wonder if not having the vertical seams in the white area above the bust would work. Will you be repeating this design in another color block? I look forward to seeing what you do next.

Thank you, Alex! Maybe you missed the sentence where I wrote that I will eliminate the middle/vertical seams if I make the dress again. I completely agree with you 🙂

I grew old trying to get to the bottom of your comments to put in my threepennyworth! but I just had to tell you how lovely this dress is and how beautiful it looks on you – well done. Like Cissie I feel a copy coming on if I can find the right fabric here in the UK. But then I have copies both you and Cissie before and you have never led me astray [for style and quality if not cash!]

I have recently discovered Akris Punto and really enjoy his clothing. I love the styles but the fabrics used do not justify the high prices charged. I had pinned some of his garments but planned to use natural fabrics instead.
    Love, love your interpretation.

Great job! I realised I have expensive taste, unfortunately I can’t afford most of those clothes! Years ago I started to try stuff on and take a picture in the fitting room or I’d buy the garment, measure and copy the pattern and return it! If I can do it myself, why not? hehe. I don’t buy patterns, I make my own (I work as a pattern and sample maker) But last december for my b-day I subscribed to BurdaStyle magazine because…….I got lazy! Here’s for a life full of nice clothes made by ourselves! <3 xoxo
